VIDEO: Three arrested after man shot in the stomach at apartments on Station Hill in Bury St Edmunds

Three people have been arrested after a man was shot in the stomach at a block of apartments, on Station Hill, in Bury St Edmunds.

Police were called at 6.45pm last night, Tuesday, to reports that a man had been shot in Forum Court and he has been taken to hospital, where he is described as being in a stable condition.

In the early hours of this morning, Wednesday August 5, officers arrested three people on suspicion of conspiracy to murder in connection with this incident.

The 58-year-old man and two women aged 59 and 28 - all from the Needham Market area - have been taken into police custody for questioning by detectives.

Station Hill was cordoned off with about 20 police vehicles at the scene while the police helicopter, armed response and dog units are assisting with the investigation.

It is understood the air ambulance attended the scene.

Superintendent Jon Dodman said: “I would like to reassure local residents that we do not believe there is any risk to the wider public following this attack.

“Officers are doing all they can to find those responsible and I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or who has any information, to contact us as soon as possible.”

A resident, who was first on the scene to help the man, told the Bury Free Press: “I heard someone shouting help, help, but I didn’t know if they were messing around.

“I looked out of the window and could see a man begging for an ambulance because he said he had been shot. His whole face and leg was covered in blood and so was his hands.

“I didn’t think, I just called an ambulance and ran down to him with a towel.”

“I told the ambulance I had to leave them on the phone because I had to get to him to stop him bleeding.”

She said another neighbour, who is an army medic, arrived on the scene to also offer help.

“I stayed with him holding his hands trying to help him breathe but when he took deep breaths it hurt,” she said. “The army medic asked him questions to keep him talking and I was just trying to get him to concentrate on breathing.

“The paramedics arrived and took care of him before he was put in the ambulance.

“I didn’t think at the time only when I got back with bloody hands and a bloody towel that I started to shake and realise what had happened.

“He couldn’t stay still and we tried to get him to lay down. If it wasn’t for the army medic I couldn’t have dealt with him on my own. I just knew that the wound needed pressure until the ambulance arrived.

“I didn’t think about the danger, I just saw a man covered in blood and pleading for help. The poor man looked distressed and there was just all this blood down his body, he was covered all over.

“I have done Red Cross (first aid) training and knew I needed 999 and a towel and that was it.”

Another resident said: “There was a guy in the middle of the complex holding his chest with his top off shouting out at all the windows.

“It was pretty apparent he had come out of one of the blocks here and he was shouting ‘I’ve been shot, call someone please, I’ve been shot’.

“He collapsed. I called the police. There was an ambulance and the air ambulance and by that point the police said can you move away from the area and get inside the block.

“There is half of the complex which has been cordoned off. They don’t want people going in or walking through.

“If it was a case of someone has been shot and that has really been the case I would say it is pretty disturbing and pretty shocking and pretty out of the blue.”

Another resident said he saw a man with a bloodied torso while another counted 16 police vehicles at the scene, some of them armed.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service added: “We received a call at 6.46pm to reports of a person who had been shot.

“We sent two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, the hazardous area response team, an ambulance officer and the east anglian air ambulance. One patient was treated at scene and taken to hospital in what was believed to be a stable condition.”
