UPDATED: Expect much more than carols at Bury’s musical Christmas Fayre

Whatever your taste in music, you are bound to find something to suite your ear when you visit Bury St Edmunds annual Christmas Fayre this week.

There are two musical stages at opposite ends of the fayre. Down on Angel Hill you will find the Greene King stage while the arc is hosting The Music Sales Group’s stage.

The music kicks off first in Angel Hill at 4pm on Thursday with Diss raised Daisy Windsor and friends. She says she does ‘mainly original material, jazz standards, as well as some occasional jigs and reels’,

Then at 7pm the five-piece rock band Heathen take over that stage.

The first act in the arc is Ixworth Primary School choir at 4.45pm on Thursday, followed, after the Christmas parade leaves the square, by The Great Waldingfield Minstrels at 6pm and the Bury Community Choir at 7pm.

Then each stage begins a full day’s programme on Friday morning with Westley Middle School at 10am in the arc and Edmund Octet male voice group on Angel hill from 11am.

Performances carry on into the evening with styles ranging from school choirs to bearded busker Alton Wahlberg’s folk/indie style and The Rock Choir.

Both stages are back in action at 10am on Saturday with the St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir on the Greene King stage and The Great Waldingfield Minstrels on the Music Sales stage, followed by the acoustic rock duo Silbury Hill.

That sets the variety for the rest of the day, with performances carrying on until 7pm when the Children’s Theatre Company take the stage in the arc at and Turntable, who call themselves a ‘function band’, start in Angel Hill.

Sunday starts a little later at 11am with Viva Voices is on stage in Angel Hill and Joe and Chelle in the arc.

Performances end in the arc at 3.30pm with Musical Medley while at 4pm Angel Hill sees the closing service with Churches Together and traditional carols by The Salvation Army Band.

In between there are many local school musicians and choirs taking part as well as a mix of community choirs and professional singers.

And if you want to join in the carol singing, there are shoppers’ carol services at St Edmundsbury Cathedral on Friday and Saturday at 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
