Work on a burst water main in Bury St Edmunds which brought traffic to a standstill this morning is set to continue through today.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said its teams had been working on a burst water main in Tayfen Road yesterday, and attributed this morning’s congestion to the traffic management still in place.

Police were called to Tayfen Road at around 8.45am to reports of a burst water main, which was causing congestion across the town. Traffic coming into Bury from the A14 was also reported to be at a standstill.

A police spokeswoman said officers had temporarily closed Tayfen Road and other surrounding streets to ease the congestion. The roads have since reopened.

Anglian Water’s spokesman said teams would continue working on the road today, with manually controlled traffic lights expected to be in place in Tayfen Road during rush hour this evening.

The road is expected to be fully open by 6am tomorrow.
