Ultrafast broadband for Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds is among 59 locations chosen by BT Openreach to get the next generation ultrafast broadband.

The new areas across the UK set to benefit from next generation Gfast broadband technology were announced yesterday and BT Openreach says more than 370,000 homes and businesses will be able to order ultrafast broadband in these areas.

The company says the new network is more secure and reliable than existing technology. It uses special software that can detect and fix issues before customers even notice and provides a faster, more stable service making it ideal for home workers and small business use.

The increased bandwidth is enough to allow a 4K TV running in every room of your house simultaneously, or pick a film and have it ready to watch on your phone or tablet almost immediately.

It also provides enough additional capacity to ensure broadband connections to homes and businesses are able to support future data-hungry services.

Kim Mears, Openreach’s infrastructure development director, said: “Britons are using their home broadband connections more than ever – consuming more than double the amount of data than they did three years ago.

"A mass of new apps and services which demand higher quality broadband connections are finding their way into our homes and businesses. That’s why we’re constantly investing in upgrades to the network, to make sure we stay a step ahead of that demand.”

Openreach provides the telephone and broadband network used by service providers such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Vodafone. It has already made ultrafast broadband available to more than one and a half million premises across the UK.

Its ‘Fibre First’ programme aims to reach three million premises by the end of 2020 taking fibre optic cables from the exchange right tothe users' premises. Openreach wants to extend this to about 10 million premises by the mid-2020s, and the majority of homes and businesses across Britain.
