Tributes to ‘well loved’ Needham Market FC fan

Tributes have been paid to a long-time supporter of Needham Market Football Club who was loved and respected by players and fans alike.

Dave ‘Dillon’ Lockwood, who had been involved with the club for around 30 years, passed away on Tuesday, June 30 aged 85.

The father of two played an active role as a club committee member, helping out with general maintenance at the grounds both inside and out.

After suffering a stroke around 15 years ago Dillon had problems with his speech and mobility, but did not let this stop his dedicated match attendance, hardly missing a home game and also attending nearby away games.

Nick Francis, club vice-chairman, who used to drive Dillon to the team’s matches, said: “He was very well loved and respected by the club, the fans and the players, who were always pleased to see him.

“He had his own resilience Right up until the 11th hour he managed to keep his house and garden in order.

“He will be a face at the football club and in the town that will be very sadly missed.”

Dillon, who worked as a driver for the Malga Factory, was also invovled with Ipswich Town Football Club for a time.

Mark Morsley, Needham Market FC manager, said: “He loved our club and everyone involved but I believe most of all he loved the players and I know the players loved him.

“There can be nothing more humbling for a footballer to be adored by a man who was so full of humility and never moaned about his problems so long as he could cheer us onto victory.”
