Bury St Edmunds and Brandon scoop multiple awards at Anglia in Bloom




Bury St Edmunds and Brandon has seen Suffolk strike ‘gold’ at Anglia in Bloom’s award ceremony this week.

The event, at Orsett Hall, near Grays, in Essex, saw Bury in Bloom take its 11th gold in the Large Town category as well as a number of other accolades, with Brandon in Bloom scooping two golds, including the Town category.

David Irvine coordinator of Bury in Bloom, said: “We are delighted to have come home with so many awards for our beautiful town that recognise the efforts put in by our supporters and the hundreds of volunteers involved.”

Other awards the group won on the day included a gold in the Wildlife and Conservation Category for Bury Water Meadows Group, an award win for Best Community Project for Crafty Foxes’ Bury in Plume Peacock, West Suffolk Crematorium took gold for the Cemeteries and Crematoria Category, Glastonbury Court Care Home won a silver award in the Care Homes Category and the Abbey Gardens and Nowton Park went home with silvers in the Parks Category.

The ceremony was not finished for Suffolk towns as Brandon in Bloom also took golds in the Queen’s Jubilee Display category for its ‘The Wedge’ floral display, as well as the Town category and an award win for the town’s ‘Friendly Bench’ in the Best Garden for Special Needs category.

Rachel Sobiechowski, head of horticulture for the group, said: “The result still really has not sunk in. All of the volunteers have worked so hard this year in extremely challenging drought and heat conditions and the success is entirely down to their dedication to improve Brandon for all.

“My thanks also go to the Brandon Town Keepers and West Suffolk Council staff for all their efforts in ensuring the town looked it’s best on judging day – the planning for 2023 has already begun.”
