Bury St Edmunds Primark moves a step closer as work to start soon on new entrance doors
Plans to open a Primark in Bury St Edmunds are moving a step closer as work continues.
The fast fashion retailer will move into the ground and first floors of the former Debenhams at the arc shopping centre and is expected to open before the end of the year.
The new shop will create about 90 jobs.
Hoarding was being installed today as work will soon start on the new entrance doors for the Primark store.
A 306-seat Everyman Cinema, with a small bar/restaurant, is set to open in the basement of the empty department store.
Debenhams, the arc's flagship store, shut in May 2021 when the struggling firm disappeared from the high street following a multi-million pound takeover of the brand which excluded its shops.
It opened at the launch of the shopping centre 14-years-ago.
Primark announced it was opening a branch in Bury St Edmunds in November following demand from shoppers across West Suffolk, with thousands joining the Primark for Bury St Edmunds Facebook group.
At the time, Philippa Nibbs, Primark UK director of sales for London and the South East, said: “We know people in Bury St Edmunds have been calling for a local Primark for a while now, so we’re delighted to finally be able to confirm our plans for the town.
"We’re really looking forward to becoming a part of this great community and bringing new and existing customers the Primark products they love.”
An opening date has yet to be confirmed.
