Wooster’s Bakery, in Langton Place, Bury St Edmunds and Wyken Vineyards, named among nation’s best by The Good Food Guide

A town bakery has been named among the nation’s best by a prestigious guide.

Wooster’s Bakery, which operates out of Langton Place, in Bury St Edmunds, was the only Suffolk outlet to be included in The Good Food Guide’s list of the top 50 bakeries across Great Britain.

The list, revealed today, is compiled through ‘expert on-the-ground knowledge’ from the Guide’s anonymous inspectors.

Wooster’s has previously been recognised as being among the best pastry producers in the world by La Liste, while Nigella Lawson praised it as having the ‘best malt loaf ever’.

The Good Food Guide said there was ‘something of a local fan-club’ for Wooster’s, advising customers to ‘look sharp’ as the shelves can empty quickly.

On the bread side, it recommended the bakery’s sprouted rye sourdough and white batch loaf. For those with a sweet tooth, it suggested a cream-filled morning bun or some of its soft amaretti.

In neighbouring Cambridgeshire, the Bake Shop in Ely and Kanto in Cambridge made it onto the list.

In Norfolk, The Old Store in Snettisham and Mabel in Downham Market also cracked the top 50.

On the list this year was the northernmost entry to ever appear; Cereal Bakery in Tongue, a small village on coast of the northwest Scottish Highlands, led by British-Chinese baker Wing Mon Cheung.

Last month, Wooster’s announced it would leave its flagship windmill in Bardwell for Wyken Vineyards, in Stanton, a move owner Will said was ‘bittersweet’. However, he said he was looking forward to having a permanent location at Wyken.

The bakery was launched by his parents from the windmill in 1992.

Chloë Hamilton, editor of The Good Food Guide, said: “Some of the best talent on the food scene right now is in Britain’s bakeries.

“The bakers are the people most connected to their local food systems and celebrating the best of the British seasons, and the quality of craftsmanship outshines the pastry sections of some of the country’s top restaurants.

“The best part is, you can get a taste of it for (mostly) less than a fiver – you’ll just have to join the queue.”

Wooster’s previously appeared on the guide in 2023.
