The Machismo’s look forward to headlining gig in Bury St Edmunds

The Machismo’s, which began in 1996 as a solo project for former Jacob’s Mouse singer/drummer Sam Marsh, are headling the Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday.

Following the release of The Machismo’s debut solo album in August 2013 - 20 years after he recorded it - Sam has recruited his wife Rachel and friend Karly to play the guitar parts for the reformed live band.

“I am still the band dictator unfortunately, writing everything”, said Sam.

“Karly and Rach don’t seem to mind bless ‘em.

”I can’t stop writing tunes, got loads backlogged up waiting to go... good to be selective though and choose the best... there’s a lot of very mellow beautiful songs but it doesn’t seem, the right time to do them - currently it’s all punk and energetic.

“Machismo’s was a solo project but even back in 96 I formed a band to play the songs - Rachel, my wife was in the original band, as well as Jason Mills (Rats as Big as Dogs/Volunteers) and a guy called Maf Hughes who is now a quite successful hip hop producer called ‘Chairman Maf’.

“Karly is the new member playing guitar- I originally played guitar in the first live band, but I’m well out of my comfort zone with that so I’ve gone back to the protection of hiding behind a drum kit.”

“Originally Karly was a bit reluctant but soon came round to the idea, she’s brilliant,” he added.

This year Sam has released a 12” vinyl of Machismo’s remixes, recorded a 7” EP with the current band line-up and has a single in the pipeline too.

Sam said he was looking forward to joining So-Called Humans, Claws and The Few on the Hunter Club stage on Saturday June 6.

“We are well excited about our first proper headline in Bury,” he said.

“Expect a mix of old and new tunes, plus lots of poetry between songs and various banter, I like to have a laugh with the audience, baring my innermost thoughts for all to see.”

“The Bury scene is in tip-top condition at the moment and is getting a reputation as a fine and happening place - lots of people have been saying this as we travel further afield,” said Sam.

“There are so many great bands in Bury right now.

“I don’t think many of the population of Bury realise what’s going on - it’s such a welcoming scene, and something I think everyone who is involved in is really proud of.

“Washing Machine nights are the hub of it all so for us to have our first headline show at the Hunter Club does us proud.”
