Bury St Edmunds school Westgate Community Primary enjoys off-timetable art day for the Big Draw Festival
A whole school worked off timetable for a day to take part in a global art festival to show that everyone can be an artist.
Pupils at Westgate Community Primary School, in Bury St Edmunds, enjoyed a ‘brilliant day’ on Tuesday when they got stuck into the Big Draw Festival.
Art subject lead and reception teacher Rebecca Heuer said they explored this year’s theme, Come Back to Colour, in relation to themselves, the environment and their mental health and wellbeing.
She said the variety of ‘wonderful’ art activities included hand and feet painting with the reception children, Japanese printing with Year 1 and pop art portraits with Year 4. And at lunchtime the whole school joined together to doodle on the playground in colourful chalk.
Mrs Heuer said: “The school participated in the global event the Big Draw to raise the profile of art and let everyone know that they can be an artist!”
She added: "The day was a big success with children having the opportunity to explore different techniques and styles as well as explore their own creativity. There was some great work produced by both individuals and collaborative groups."
On Wednesday, parents were able to come and see the work produced in an art exhibition hosted by each class.
