Suffolk band, Workin Progress, to take on only their second gig in aid of Cancer Research UK at Mendlesham Community Centre, near Stowmarket

A band which formed from a Suffolk village music club is set to take on only its second live gig to fund-raise for a cancer charity.

Workin Progress, who are members of the Hopton Music Studio Club, will be performing at Mendlesham Community Centre, in aid of Cancer Research UK, on March 22.

Lead singer of the band, Alan Hopkins, said the club started around four years ago and though there had been some open mic night sessions, this would be only the second time that the club band have performed a full gig to a live audience.

“The club started when studio owner, John Chapman, wanted to bring people together who were not professionally into music to see if they wanted to do this for fun,” said Mr Hopkins.

“But as we got more songs under our belt and got more into the music, we decided we wanted to do more with the idea, so we did our first live gig about 18 months ago.”

The club meets at the Old Greyhound Barn in Bury Road, every Tuesday from 7pm, and Mr Hopkins said he hopes this upcoming performance would highlight the club as well as the important charity it is raising money for.

“The music club has really brought this want to perform out in all of us and to do it for a good cause makes it even better,” added the 55 year-old.

“I want this gig to bring the village together, so Mendlesham can stand up to cancer and show we can do something, in our own little way, to help the cause.

“Research is the way we survive things such as cancer and I believe it starts locally with villages and towns in the fight to push back against them.

“Also if the gig helps the club evolve and get more young and old people involved in music, like we all have because of it, that can only be a good thing as music is a great outlet.”

The gig for Workin Progress will be at Mendlesham Community Centre, on March 22 – tickets on the door at £10.
