So-Called Humans prepare for their return to Bury St Edmunds

So-Called Humans are returning to their spiritual home of Bury St Edmunds on June 6, playing at the Hunter Club’s Washing Machine rock night.

Singer/guitarist Ed Sykes, singer/keyboard player Adam Sawyer, singer/bassist Kieron Chatten, and drummer Matthew Coy, came together as So-Called Humans in 2009 as a studio project.

“We wanted to concentrate on song writing and recording, said Ed, “We spend two or three years doing that. “But there’s only so many years you can spend in the studio before you have couple of albums of songs.”

In 2012, the band released their album Hardwick Manor, named so because Ed and Adam both grew up in Bury.

“We’ve got a big attachment to the town,” said Ed

“Hardwick Manor was where we used to play as children -that was our Strawberry Fields.

“It reflects all the music that inspires us.”

Ed said the band had reworked their sound, stripping away much of the production to its bare bones.

“There’s much music that is contrived, it is too thought out and loses its soul,” he said.

“If it’s not hitting you in the heart and stomach then what’s the point.

“Music is at its most exciting when its at the edge and that goes across all genres.

“It should be a sonic assault when we play now. “A bit of a Marmite effect - but that’s how rock and roll should be.”
