Under The Tables karaoke bar below Gastrono-me in Bury St Edmunds gives you the chance to sing your heart out
Embracing your inner diva or rock god has never been easier, thanks to a new underground karaoke bar in Bury St Edmunds.
Under The Tables, located below Gastrono-me in Abbeygate Street, gives private groups of party-goers the chance to take to the mic without having to worry about who might be watching or listening.
Mike Simmonite, owner of Gastrono-me, said: “If you go to a pub to do karaoke with your friends and family, there are another 100 people who you don’t know who you’re competing with and it can take the fun out of it because you don’t get your opportunity to shine.
“At Under The Tables, groups are left alone to enjoy their night without interruptions from waiters or anyone else unless they are wanted.”
Parties of between six and 30 people can book the room for a minimum of two hours and try their hand at any one of the more than 80,000 songs on offer.
Once a group has booked in, they will get instant access to the karaoke song library app which will give them the chance to make their own playlists ahead of time.
A vending machine, nicknamed ‘Magical Brian’, is on hand to provide some Dutch courage in the form of beers, wine, cocktails and soft drinks, while there is also a button singers can press if something stronger is required from the upstairs bar.
“It’s very much your party and can be made into whatever you want it to be,” said Mike.
“We thought it would be fun that people dining upstairs are oblivious to the shenanigans going on under their feet. We wanted it to be a little bit naughty.”
Mike was inspired to open Under The Tables after almost 20 years of throwing his own karaoke parties at home.
“It has always been something that my family and friends have loved to do and it’s always guaranteed to be a great night,” said Mike, whose favourite karaoke song is Wonderful Night by Fatboy Slim.
And you can take his word for it as Under The Tables has already opened its door to the Gastrono-me staff for a trial run.
“We’ve tried it and we’ve tested it and I’m very pleased to say that I think it has everything you could want from a karaoke party,” he said.
“I could have stayed down there for hours – it was lovely. It’s the exact kind of thing I would love to do.”
The bar is already proving popular, with Mike having taken a booking for December 2020.
