Scenarios focus on 'crucial' life lessons

From a burning house to the dangers of swimming in open water, 1,200 pupils faced 'dangerous' scenarios to learn vital life lessons.

Over the last fortnight, Year 6 children from 36 schools across St Edmundsbury were shown by experts how to deal with potentially harmful situations and protect both themselves and others.

During the Crucial Crew activities at West Suffolk College, which concluded today, the fire service simulated what it is like being in a burning house.

Helen Lindfield, families and communities officer at West Suffolk councils, said: "It's always well received by the schools.

"It's an opportunity for children to come out of the school environment and hear messages from professionals about keeping safe."

Abbeycroft Leisure also spoke to children about the dangers of swimming in open water and how to help someone in trouble in the water.

Meanwhile, the Dogs Trust highlighted the importance of being Dog Safe.

Other scenarios involved West Suffolk Community Safety Partnership, the police, environmental health and Suffolk Road Safety.

The activities were organised and funded by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

Mrs Lindfield thanked the college for the use of its facilities as well as the Co-op and Waitrose for sponsoring the refreshments.
