Residents of Bury St Edmund's Cornwallis Court take part in their own Olympic Games
Following the UK's success in this year's Olympic games, one Bury St Edmunds care home hosted their own sporting competition for residents.
Cornwallis Court, which is owned by RMBI Care Co, have found an innovative and topical way of both engaging and entertaining residents after staff were inspired by the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Gonzalo Mellado, marketing and communications officer at RMBI Care Co said: "The residents are delighted to be the protagonists of their own Olympic Games, they really enjoy being active and having fun at the home.
"It is a very effective way to support their physical and mental health as well as their wellbeing. "
So far residents have taken part in curling, a 25-metre duster sprint and Nerf gun target shooting, with plans in place for those living in the home to take part in a frisbee throw, speed cups and basketball shots competition.
Recently, the care home held a virtual racing afternoon for the Royal Ascot, where both residents and staff dressed up and held an afternoon tea party.
Thanks to activities like these, residents are not only able to exercise and enjoy themselves, but they also have the opportunity to talk about their pastimes and reminisce about the sports they used to enjoy when they were younger.
During the first lockdown, the care home had to close its doors to all but essential visitors to protect residents and staff.
In the summer of 2020 families were able to visit using the homes’ Covid-secure visitor pods.
Telephone and video calls were also used to connect those living in the home with friends and family, this was coordinated by staff.
In line with the recent changes to Government guidance, residents can now receive an unlimited number of visits from named visitors.
Cornwallis Court’s Games will continue while the Paralympic Games are on, and the staff members will host a medal ceremony at the end, awarding certificates and rosettes for winners of all the disciplines.
