Resident feared she could be 'electrocuted' after workmen removed her bathroom ceiling at her home in Bury St Edmunds
A delighted resident has thanked our sister title (the Bury Free Press ) after the newspaper stepped in to help ease her fears of being ‘electrocuted’.
Dana Brooks, 46, called the paper after reaching the end of her tether over her missing bathroom ceiling.
Workmen from Suffolk Housing had originally removed the ceiling at her home on Jubilee Court, Nowton Road, Bury St Edmunds, which had cracked.
But the the worried resident was left with a ceiling for more than a month.
“The main light was exposed, also the socket for the light and the electric extractor fan,” said Dana, a school bus driver.
“If I had a bath or a shower I was frightened to turn on the light and had to have a bath by the light from the hallway, instead.
“In my mind they should have fixed it the very next day as it was dangerous. What if steam had got into the sockets? I could have been electrocuted.”
Suffolk Housing, part of the Flagship Group, removed the ceiling on August 26. It was arranged for them to go back on September 15 but the job didn’t go ahead.
“They just said it was due to sickness. I was already at my wit’s end and they didn’t seem to care,” said Dana.
“Apart from it being dangerous, cold air would come through the open ceiling, and the smell of the old insulation lining was terrible. I showed a friend and she said she joked she would have to start calling me ‘stinky’ because I couldn’t take a bath.”
A new date of October 7 was arranged for the workmen to visit again. This would have meant Dana would have been without her ceiling for six weeks.
After the Bury Free Press called the housing association this week, they went round the next day and the ceiling is now fixed.
Charlie Conley, head of asset investment at The Flagship Group, said: “We apologise for any delay during this time and appreciate this hasn’t been easy for Dana.”
Dana added: “The Bury Free Press was amazing. I can’t thank them enough.”
