Polish school in Thetford welcomes prominent guests

A Thetford-based language school has celebrated a national holiday with a number of important guests.

October 14 marks National Education Day in Poland and is celebrated by schools hosting special events.

But for Thetford’s Polish Language Club, known within the town’s Polish community as Nauczanie Jezyka Polskiego – Learning Polish in Thetford – the date this year had even more significance.

As well as holding a reopening event to celebrate its recent move to the Charles Burrell Centre in Staniforth Road, the school welcomed a number of high profile visitors.

These included Ines Czajczynska-Da Costa, the Polish Consulate in London, and Monika Kusztelak, of the Polish President’s Office in Warsaw, as well as Cllr Terry Jermy, the Mayor of Thetford.

Iwona Paciorkowska, the school’s operation manager, said: “We were delighted that they could come to visit us and our children and very proud to have them as our guests because we wanted to show them that what we do is something good and positive for the community.”

The school, founded five years ago by Anna Gasiorowska, currently teaches around 70 children as well as some adults and GCSE students.

It is a non-profit organisation and teaches about Polish history and culture as well as reading and writing.
