Man charged after police chase in Bury St Edmunds

A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fail-to-stop incident near Bury St Edmunds.

Tommy McDonagh, of Three Cherry Trees Lane in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, has been charged with dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

On Tuesday, officers requested a Nissan Primera to stop on the westbound A14, near junction 41 in Risby, but it failed to do so.

The Nissan Primera was pursued by police, with the vehicle making several attempts to evade officers by leaving and rejoining the dual carriageway, before it collided with a HGV lorry near junction 43 in Bury St Edmunds where it came to a stop.

Three men, including, McDonagh and a 17-year-old boy then fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the lorry was not injured during the incident.

McDonagh, a 19-year-old man from Watford, a 18-year-old man from east London and a 17-year-old boy from Hemel Hempstead were later arrested on the A10 in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, whilst travelling in a Ford Transit van.

McDonagh is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates today, Thursday, August 8.

The three remaining individuals, were arrested on suspicion of theft and brought to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

They have since been released on bail until Thursday, August 29.
