Abbey Gardens play equipment cordoned off due to 'safety reasons'

The 'multi play unit' in the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds remains cordoned off, after being shut throughout the school summer holidays.

West Suffolk Council, who manage the popular town park, said: "During a routine inspection it was found that some of the wooden supports had degraded and so we needed to close the equipment for safety reasons."

It is expected that new play equipment will be installed but the date for this cannot be confirmed at this stage.

The spokesman said the equipment, which includes two slides, was closed off at the beginning of the school summer holidays.

This followed an 'independent inspection' that is carried out annually.

The spokesman added: "We are seeking quotes for the cost and installation of a new multi-play unit.

"Once we have these back we will need to check with Historic England as the site is a scheduled monument, and then we will put in the new equipment."

A sign placed on the equipment apologised to families for any inconvenience caused.
