Plans to install 30 solar panels on a town office building and repair its outside have been approved.

JM Finns proposals for 60 Abbeygate Street, in Bury St Edmunds, were green lit by West Suffolk Council yesterday.

They will see the 30 panels installed on its roof behind an existing parapet wall, while the building’s stonework on its front can now be repaired and cleaned.

The plans also included provisions to install a lift and change the first floor to create more flexible meeting spaces.

The building is Grade II-listed and has a car park which is accessed via Guildhall Street.

Bury Town Council recommended the plans be approved.

Planners said the proposals respected the historic character of the building.

They said the development was of an appropriate design, scale and form and did not adversely affect any significant historical elements.

The plans were approved subject to conditions on a time limit for the work to be completed, accordance with approved plans, later approval of details and matching existing works.
