Plans for a Travelodge hotel and drive through Starbucks in Bury St Edmunds have been given the go-ahead by councillors.

The development on the site of Tartan House, in Etna Road, was unanimously approved at a development control committee meeting on Thursday.

Councillors had visited the site earmarked for the 80 bedroom hotel and coffee shop on June 29.

Nearby resident Sarah Kewell spoke to the meeting about the issue of access.

She said: “The access from the junction turning right on to Compiegne Way is terrible and the increase of traffic from this will make turning a real nightmare.”

Councillors agreed with her but also said this type of new development was exactly what the town needed.

The meeting heard that there will be five big developments in the area including in Tayfen Road and Station Hill.

The developments will help to fund a strategic plan for Bury’s roads which will now include the junction.
