Bury St Edmunds Mayor Peter Thompson loses Moreton Hall town and West Suffolk district seats in local elections
Bury St Edmunds Mayor Peter Thompson, who was suspended from the Conservative group for alleged breach of party rules last month, has lost his seats on West Suffolk Council and Bury St Edmunds Town Council.
Mr Thompson said: “There’s a national picture behind everything.”
He was suspended in April from the Bury St Edmunds’ Conservative Association, the Conservative Group on Suffolk County Council – where he remains a councillor – and the Conservative Group of West Suffolk Council.
He lost in Moreton Hall to Conservative candidate Birgitte Mager and Labour candidate Rowena Lindberg. Cllr Lindberg got 797 votes, Cllr Mager gained 781 and Mr Thompson gained 716.
On Bury St Edmunds Town Council, Mr Thompson got 740 votes – again losing to Rowena Lindberg and Birgitte Mager, who got 799 and 795 votes respectively. Labour candidate Peter Armitage was the third winner and got the most votes, at 810.
