Pet ban on Thetford woman for cat neglect

A pet owner has been banned from keeping animals after two kittens died when she neglected their mother and her litter.

Carla Ramos, 23, of St John’s Way, Thetford, admitted neglecting her five cats including mother Keika and her four six-week-old offspring.

Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday how she had not taken the animals to the vets when they contracted serious eye problems and cat flu.

The RSPCA were eventually called in June last year when the level of neglect was brought to their attention.

The court heard how welfare officers took the animals to the vets but two of the kittens died.

Ramos, from Thetford, Norfolk, was banned from keeping animals for three years on Thursday and ordered to pay £1,047 in costs and fines.

RSPCA inspector David Podmore said afterwards: “This was a case of extreme neglect which very sadly led to the deaths of two of the kittens. They simply were not given the care they needed or deserved and were left to suffer without treatment.

“Thankfully, the mother and the other two kittens made a good recovery though and have now been rehomed.

“These deaths could easily have been avoided with a bit of veterinary care earlier on. We would also urge people to remember how important it is to neuter cats to prevent unwanted litters of kittens like this, which then end up suffering and being neglected as owners cannot care for them.”
