Parking restrictions are being introduced at West Suffolk House in Bury St Edmunds in order to free up spaces in the car park.

From August 2, visitors will have to collect and display a free parking ticket - and could face a fine of up to £70 if they leave their vehicle for more than 90 minutes.

The restrictions will apply between 8am-5pm so should not affect most council meetings.

Provision is also being made to ensure members of the public attending development control committee meetings will avoid having to worry about time left on their ticket.

Visitors attending for any other meeting that might run over the 90 minutes are advised to park in Olding Road.

West Suffolk house is currently home to St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Forest Heath District Council, Suffolk County Council and the West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group.

Cllr Peter Stevens, St Edmundsbury Cabinet Member for Operations, said: “The cost of parking at West Suffolk House will remain free for 90 minutes which should be more than enough time for the vast majority of our customers.

“Ultimately this is to ensure spaces are available for members of the public when they visit West Suffolk House.”

Cllr David Bowman, Forest Heath’s Cabinet Member for Operations, said: “These new parking restrictions are not designed to target members of the public attending West Suffolk House, but to ensure parking spaces are made available for them.”

The consultation over the car parking changes is open until July 30.
