Western Way Development including new leisure centre for Bury St Edmunds proposal takes a step forward
Plans for a multi-million pound public sector hub including a new leisure centre in Bury St Edmunds are progressing.
An independent review of the Western Way Development business case said there was no reason it should not progress, provided some existing financial tests are passed.
The multi-million project would bring together public services and replace the ageing Beetons Way leisure centre.
The review is one of the safeguards West Suffolk Council has put in place for the project. Its recommendations will be presented to West Suffolk Council’s cabinet when it meets on Tuesday.
The review said the project was ‘challenging’ but would likely deliver community and environmental benefits.
Cllr Joanna Rayner, cabinet member for leisure, culture and community hubs, said: “There is still a long way to go, but this is the next step towards delivering on this long-held ambition.”
The project is still subject to planning permission, with a decision expected later this year.
