Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre to include new attractions at Guildhall, St John's Street and Abbey Gardens, while security measures to return this year

One of Bury St Edmunds' oldest buildings will be the newest attraction at the annual Christmas Fayre, from November 22-25.

The Guildhall, which re-opened in July following restoration, will host toy-making workshops for children and festive food and drinks for adults on the Saturday and Sunday of the fayre.

Another fayre first is the Elves Wonderland, in St John's Street, where independent traders will hold a three-day festival with live music, street food, mulled wine and gin.

Also new for 2018 is the Haart community stage, in the Abbey Gardens.

Fayre preparations are well under way, with the town set to host more than 300 stalls, the Ice Cookery Theatre in the Cathedral Courtyard, street and farmers' markets, funfairs, entertainment, Santa's Grotto and more.

While there is no specific threat to the event security measures, including armed police and barrier systems, will be in force again this year.

Superintendent Kim Warner, Suffolk Police western area commander, said: “Once again we will have armed and unarmed officers at the fayre, working hard to keep people safe, offer visible public assurance, deter or detect anybody up to no good and to make sure everyone has a great time.”

The fayre starts at midday on November 22. Opening day attractions include a penguin puppet parade from The Apex to Angel Hill at 5.30pm, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices Carol Concert at St Edmundsbury Cathedral at 7pm and a fireworks display in the Abbey Gardens at 8pm.

Park and ride from Saxham Business Park starts at 11am on the Thursday, while park and walk sites include West Suffolk College; Olding Road council car park; Greene King; and Priory and St Edmundsbury schools.
