RAF Mildenhall to remain operational until 'at least' 2027
RAF Mildenhall will stay open until 2027 ‘at the earliest.’
The base was previously scheduled to close in 2023, after an initial decision had been made in 2015.
A spokesperson for the US Air Force said: “The date has been pushed back to 2027 at the earliest after co-ordination between governments. We constantly re-assess plans but it will be no earlier than 2027.”
More than 500 RAF and US Air Force troops and their families were due to move to move to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. under the initial proposals, but that will now be delayed for a further seven years.
The looming closure has left a cloud of uncertainty over surrounding communities in recent years as residents attempt to plan for a multi-million pound hit to the local economy.
Cllr Sara Mildmay-White said: “We look forward to continuing working alongside our American friends and neighbours at RAF Mildenhall as well as supporting the growth coming through the expansion at RAF Lakenheath and the contract opportunities that it presents for local businesses.
“Once we have certainty over a closure date for the Mildenhall base, we are ready to lead on its future regeneration.”
There are currently no definitive plans for how the Mildenhall base will be used or redeveloped following its closure, but when the decision is made, filling the economic void will be a priority.
The base has been open since 1934, with American troops having been stationed there since 1959.
When the base does eventually close, the US aircraft will be redeployed to Germany.
