Stanton Community Primary School pupils learn about metal recycling with Tata Steel

Children have learnt about the importance of recycling metal during a visit by a steel manufacturing company.

The Metal Matters Roadshow, which is supported by Suffolk County Council, saw Eleanor Shorland, a recycling education officer for Tata Steel Europe, visit Stanton Community Primary School in Stanton, near Bury St Edmunds, on Monday, October 10.

The Year 5 pupils learnt about how to recognise steel or aluminium with a magnet, what happens to the metals at the recycling plant and what products the recycled metal is used to make.

They also learnt that it is best to wash out used cans with dirty water as fresh water can cancel out the benefits of recycling the metal.

Liz Bonnelykke, class teacher and deputy head, said: “The children really enjoyed it. It left them wanting to find out more.”
