No.5 Angel Hill opens on site of former Scandinavian Coffee House in Bury St Edmunds

It may not be called the Scandinavian Coffee House any more, but the taste and atmosphere of Europe remains inside newly opened No. 5 Angel Hill.

Bury St Edmunds couple Charlie and Tanya Athorne refurbished the café in 12 days, bringing in artwork and tables from Dapper Aviation, which makes furniture from aircraft parts.

“It’s all about the community and it is the perfect location to share,” said Tanya, whose first job was at the premises after moving from Ukraine.

The couple, who have two children, met while working at The Angel Hotel and dreamed of taking over the café, which has 20 years of history.

“Changing the name was a big decision,” said Charlie, who is vice- chairman of Bury’s Round Table.

“But we wanted something new to increase the town’s offering. We love European culture where food, drink and conversation rolls into evening.”

Charlie said customers were ‘guests’ and had ‘widely supported’ No. 5 since it opened on Saturday.

In coming weeks, opening hours will extend for wine and aperitif snacks. Tanya added: “We want to be different, not as a way of making money, but to express who we are.”
