Medal awarded to Bury St Edmunds nurse

A nurse from Bury St Edmunds has been given a new national award for showing exceptional care.

Pippa Sharp, a staff nurse with Thornbury Nursing Services and an Adult Nursing Lecturer at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich, was given a Cavell Star Award after being nominated by a colleague for going above and beyond.

Peter Mason, Pippa’s colleague, said: “She’s always helping colleagues with advice and support and she’s always so positive. Her patients are at the centre of her care and she always treats them with dignity and respect. I think she’s a very worthy winner.”

Ms Sharp, who has been a nurse for 16 years, received the award and praised her team that she classes as her ‘second family’.

She said: “Often as a nurse you know that you make an impact but rarely do nurses get recognition. So it’s an amazing feeling to be told that you’ve made a real difference to people’s lives, patients and colleagues.”

The award is given by nursing charity, Cavell Nurses’ Trust, who supports UK nurses, midwives and HCAs, both working and retired, who suffer personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age and domestic abuse.

Nominations are being sought from nursing teams throughout the UK for that special team mate who has shown exceptional care for either their colleagues or their patients and patients’ families.

John Orchard, chief executive at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, said: “We know there are nursing professionals up and down the country who show exceptional care every day, often in very difficult circumstances and sometimes when their own life is falling apart. You can say a big ‘thank you’ to your colleagues by giving them a Cavell Star Award”
