Mustafa Ramzan jailed for 10 years after raping woman in Bury St Edmunds in 2020
A man who raped a woman in Bury St Edmunds in 2020 has been jailed for 10 years after being found guilty of a string of offences.
Mustafa Ramzan, 34, of Wenlock Mews, London, was found guilty on December 8 of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration, robbery and criminal damage.
At Ipswich Crown Court on Monday, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail for rape with concurrent sentences of seven years for attempted rape, six years for sexual assault by penetration and four years for robbery.
In April 2020, Ramzan met a woman in her 40s in Bury St Edmunds and after they met the pair went to a nearby small room in Rougham Road where he raped her.
The victim, who left the site distressed and partially dressed, was robbed of all her money barring £10 and her mobile phone was also damaged – after a police investigation, Ramzan was arrested on April 18, 2020 and charged with the offences.
DC Stephanie Rose, the investigating officer in the case and from Bury St Edmunds Safeguarding team, said: “This was an extremely traumatic experience for the victim and one that she would have had to re-visit in the court room due to Ramzan’s not guilty plea, an experience which would have only added to her trauma.
“I would like to pay tribute to the victim’s bravery and this case does clearly demonstrate that we are absolutely committed to preventing violence against women and girls, pursuing perpetrators, supporting victims and continuing to strengthen and improve our response to ensure the safety of our communities.
“We urge victims of any serious violent or sexual offence to come forward and we remain committed to supporting all victims who report sexual offences.”
