Man arrested on suspicion of Bury St Edmunds rape after alleged serious sexual assault near Waitrose
A man has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds.
Police investigating the 3am assault on a woman in her 20s made an arrest late this afternoon.
Detectives have arrested a 37-year-old man from North Norfolk on suspicion of rape.
The man has been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
The victim continues to be supported by specialist trained officers.
Police lifted a cordon earlier today after taping off an alleyway between the arc and the town's Waitrose store, in Robert Boby Way.
The taped off area was reopened early this afternoon, allowing Christmas shoppers to access the store from the King's Road entrance again.
Police said the woman was attacked in the alley at some time between midnight and 2.30am.
The superstore in Robert Boby Way was unaffected by the incident and remained open throughout.
Police continue to investigate. They would like to hear from any potential witnesses, in particular anyone who was in the vicinity of the car park and surrounding roads who may have seen or heard anything.
