A Stowmarket company has been short listed for a national award.

Malt and malted ingredients manufacturer Muntons has been nominated for the Industrial Project of the Year Award for its anaerobic digester plant.

It has been short listed for its low carbon and renewable energy generation by the Association of Decentralised Energy.

The system supplies 11 per cent of Muntons’ electrical baseload, providing significant cost and carbon savings.

The heat generated is used to pasteurize high quality biofertiliser, which is used on local agricultural land.

Tests have suggested that the plant could potentially provide a new source of antibiotics that kills multi-drug resistant E.coli.

Ryland Cairns, environment manager for Muntons, said: “I am thrilled. This speaks volumes for the quality of the concept, the quality of the plant and the technology.

“We are proud to be working alongside another organisation that values the importance of research and innovation to develop greener products and services.”

The award winners will be announced next month in London.
