Launderette is clean sweep for Bury St Edmunds shopping precinct

A new launderette has made it a clean sweep for a Bury St Edmunds shopping precinct after filling the last vacant unit.

Vanessa Ghale-Soltani and husband Jeff have opened The Coin-Op Launderette at the Hardwick shopping centre.

They say the venture will meet local demand and offer households a much needed stress relief as washing piles mount during the winter months.

Mrs Ghale-Soltani, 41, of Wretton, Norfolk, said: “It’s a business idea we’ve had for quite a few years - we’ve had launderettes in the past in Essex, which is where I’m orginally from so it seemed like a natural thing to do.

“We looked at this shop many years ago when we moved upto Norfolk and it didn’t happen. It came back on the market this time and it just seemed like the right opportunity.

“It’s definitely a needed facility. This is a fast paced area - we’re right opposite the hospital - so there are people moving in and out. There are always going to be issues with getting washing machines plugged in and waiting for them to arrive.

“Our machines are very big. It’s wet and cold weather - mums are stressing because washing piles are getting bigger and they can do it here. It takes the stress out of it.”

With six washers and six dryers, which are all coin operated, the launderette offers a service wash facility as well free tea and coffee and wi-fi.

Mrs Ghale-Soltani added: “Bringing stuff to the launderette is far more economical when you think about how much water and electricity you’re using at home.”

County and Borough Cllr Sarah Stamp, who represents the area, said: “It’s fantastic to see the last shop on the parade let, meaning all shops are now occupied for the first time in a long while.

“Several local residents have told me how pleased they are to have a launderette on the estate.”
