Conservatoire East, of West Suffolk College, brings Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the Bury St Edmunds stage

Students have this week brought Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the stage in Bury St Edmunds.

With the production running from last night to Saturday, Conservatoire East, the acting arm of West Suffolk College, is performing the iconic gothic horror story of how a scientist (Victor Frankenstein) brings a ‘creature’ to life during his experiments.

The plot then charts the fallout from the experiment and explores how the characters interact with themselves and the world.

Masha Skinner, 19, from Bury, is on a level three musical theatre course at West Suffolk College.

Speaking ahead of opening night, Masha, who plays the ‘creature’ or monster as it is often dubbed, said: “In a nutshell, it’s the story of innocence and how this innocence is eventually tainted. I’d say the play is very different to most of the film adaptations I’ve seen. It’s a very deep emotional piece and I’m excited by it.

“Rehearsals have been going well and I think people should come along and watch it because it is entertaining, funny, dramatic and it allows the audience to really think – it challenges them in terms of who they are rooting for. If I could sum it up, I’d say it’s challenging, thrilling and beautiful.”

The production is taking place in the theatre that is housed in the grounds of West Suffolk College.
