Zebra crossings on Symonds Road, in Bury St Edmunds, to be repaired confirms Suffolk Highways
Suffolk Highways has confirmed road markings on faded zebra crossings will be repainted as a matter of urgency after a near-miss yesterday.
Two of the crossings in Symonds Road, in Bury St Edmunds, will be refreshed, with work starting on Monday.
This comes after mum, Olive Quinn, 29, who lives on the Moreton Hall estate, was almost hit by a car as she used the crossing near the Christ Church yesterday morning.
She said: “The paint has all but worn away, so newcomers to the area probably wouldn't even know to slow down until the last minute.”
Andy McGowan, vice chair of the Moreton Hall Residents Association (MHRA), described the planned work as ‘positive and timely’.
He said: “I think it is vital that the crossings are fixed, it’s an accident waiting to happen.
“It can be nigh on impossible to realise it is actually a crossing.”
Mr McGowan said the crossing had been reported to Suffolk Highways last year and then again in January, before the near-miss yesterday.
He said “It is long overdue for this to be fixed.
“I think it’s a wider issue about ensuring that routes are safe for people to be using.”
The issue with the crossing has also prompted concerns about road markings in other areas of Bury, said Mr McGowan.
According to the Suffolk Highways website, which logs upcoming roadworks, there will be a temporary obstruction, for 15 minutes, between 7pm on Monday to 5am on Tuesday.
The work is categorised as ‘urgent’.
