Bury St Edmunds-based West Suffolk College to remember the fallen with 12-metre-wide wooden billboard made by carpentry team

The West Suffolk College carpentry team have all chipped in to create a powerful tribute ahead of Armistice Day on November 11.

Students and staff are making a 12 metre wide and four metre high billboard to remember those who have defended freedom across the globe.

The image that is being made will depict animals, soldiers and all those that were left behind to try and reflect all those affected by conflict.

A ceremony will take place at the Milburn campus of the college in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday, November 10, just before 11am.

Carpentry lecturer Brian Tunbridge, who is organising the activities, said: “It’s important to remember as it is part of our history. My grandparents were in the Second World War so I’ll be thinking of them during the ceremony.”

One of the people helping him and the college team is current plumbing student, Ryan Lewis, 20, from the town, who did a carpentry course last year.

Ryan said: “I’m helping cut the design out and I wanted to get involved. My grandad was in World War Two. He was in tanks at the age of 16. I’ll be thinking of him during Remembrance Day.”

Anglian Scaffolding and Morgan Sindall have supplied scaffolding and wood to support this project.
