Blokes at the Oakes celebrates 10th birthday at Oakes Barn in Bury St Edmunds

Members of a men’s social group for over 60s have come together to celebrate its 10th birthday.

Blokes at the Oakes congregate at the Oakes Barn pub, in St Andrews Street South, Bury St Edmunds, on the first Thursday of each month, and meet several times a week elsewhere.

Since it was founded in 2015, the group has grown from just four members to more than 25 regular members.

Long-term member, Bernard Debney, 77, previously ran the group for more than eight years.

He said: “It’s a really nice and lovely feeling to celebrate this milestone.

“It’s steadily grown over the years and I’m proud that I’ve helped contribute and develop this to where it is now. It feels quite special.

“It does people in the group a lot of good and it’s great for them to meet other people.

“I’m now looking forward to the next 10 years.”

Blokes at the Oakes do a variety of regular activities including bowling, breakfasts, evening meals out, day trips, and more.

The group welcomes new members and there is no membership charge.
