After travelling the world for 50 years, a Lakenheath couple celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary are adjusting to a quieter life.

Jean and George Bolden, both 85, met when they were 17 and married in north London on April 1, 1950 after George had completed two years’ national service with the RAF.

In an exhilarating start to married life, they were members of a motorcycle club in Dalston for seven years.

Radio Rentals employee George and secretary Jean travelled to the USA and Asia, and along the Thames and the Grand Union canal in their many boats, one of which was built in their back garden.

The pair continued to travel after retiring, touring the UK and Europe for 20 years in a motorhome which they only sold last year.

Jean said: “George always wanted to be doing something, that’s why we’ve had boats, motorcycles and motorhomes. It was very exciting.”

After moving to Worlington 21 years ago, Jean and DIY enthusiast George built a bungalow together.

“His is a real DIY man, it’s come in handy,” said Jean.

Golfer of 35 years George prompted their move to Ely around 10 years ago, where they lived for four years before coming to Lakenheath.

Now proud parents of two, grandparents of four and great grandparents of five, who all live nearby, the couple are finally settling down.

Keen knitter Jean said: “We just take things as they come, and a glass of wine a day keeps us going. We are still together after 65 years and living happily with all our memories.”
