Soldier silhouettes back on Haughley village green in the run up to Remembrance Sunday

This year people driving through Haughley will once again see the poignant sight of 41 soldier silhouettes on the village green.

Each November since 2019, visitors to the village near Stowmarket have been able to pay their respects to the men from Haughley who left for war, never to return again.

The 41 soldiers were made from plywood and then painted black to give the appearance of silhouettes.

They were designed by Kieron Palmer, the owner of the historic Palmers Bakery.

The silhouettes will remain on the village green for the season of Remembrance, until the middle of November and Mr Palmer said the public can visit 'and wander amongst the fallen'.

He added: "Each silhouette represents one of the 41 men of Haughley who left the village in the two world wars to fight for our freedom and never returned."

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 5, Haughley British Legion will be running the Community Cafe at the village hall, selling tea, coffee, cakes and mince pies - there will also be a small number of craft stalls.

On Friday, November 11, the two minutes silence will be marked by the sounding of the parish air raid siren.

This will be followed by a short service amongst the soldier silhouettes led by the vicar alongside the Royal British Legion and children of Haughley's Crawford's School.

There will also be a Remembrance Sunday service and parade at Haughley church on Sunday, November 13, at 10.50am.

The parade assembles at the post office at 10.25am and will leave at 10.40am.

Palmers Bakery in Haughley will be selling poppy muffins and biscuits in aid of the Royal British Legion.

There will also be a special 'Haughley Fallen' display in the bakery window.
