Great 'livestock weather' for South Suffolk Show

While a hot sunny day may pull in the crowds, it is hardly ideal for the main attractions at an agricultural show the livestock.

So South Suffolk Show secretary Geoff Bailes was pleased when yesterday dawned overcast at Ampton Race Course near Ingham.

He explained: "For livestock it was ideal it was overcast, it wasn't too cold and there wasn't much wind. The sun brings out the families, but it's not ideal for the livestock.

"We had an extremely good turnout for sheep and cattle with some very very good animals and good numbers,

"On the sheep side, we haven't seen so many for many a year. Judging took five hours because of the number and the quality of them."

Horse classes included qualifiers for the Royal International Horse Show and local riders were in the rosettes, including Kate Ober from Elmswell Hall, whose horse Cob Only Knows was the Cob Champion.

In the ring, attractions also included the Cavalry of Heroes stunt rider team's tribute to the horsemen of World War One and displays of falconry, gun dogs, chainsaw sculpture and farm machinery past and present.

In addition there were stalls selling everything from vegan soap to meat pies, plus all kinds of country crafts, ancient and modern.
