Free screening of Garfield at Bury St Edmunds’ Cineworld sees record turnout
A community champion who has been organising free movie events for more than a year has recorded his highest turnout at the latest screening.
Since last June, Thomas Howard has been hiring cinemas in Bury St Edmunds to help those struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis or disabilities.
More than 120 people turned up to Thomas’ fifth event at Cineworld on Saturday to watch family-favourite Garfield.
Children were treated to free activity packs, sweets, drinks and popcorn.
Thomas said: “The cost-of-living crisis is still lingering and affecting so many in our community.
“These events are designed to make cinema accessible and affordable and they mean a lot to me on a personal level.
“I have been able to meet some lovely people and build relationships with a range of community activists and companies.
“I have autism and can often find social interactions difficult, but these screenings have helped me build confidence.”
Thomas has also created a website, which gives people a chance to enter competitions and win prizes. For more, click here.
He added: “I cannot thank the community enough for their support and encouragement. It really means so much. Thank you.
“This certainty won't be the last free cinema screening. I am already planning another event for later this year, and I hope that this project continues to grow and thrive in Bury St Edmunds."
