Bury St Edmunds roadworks on A134 Sicklesmere Road ‘remain on track’ as town braces for four consecutive weekends of closures
A developer has said roadworks on a key route in Bury St Edmunds remain on schedule as it braces for four consecutive weekends of closures.
Hopkins Homes has warned that the A134 Sicklesmere Road will shut from 8pm today until 5am on Monday.
The route will close each weekend until April 14, with a week-long break for the Easter period.
A 43 mile diversion associated with the scheme has wrought havoc on Bury’s roads, with many using routes such as Hawstead Lane in Sicklesmere as a rat run to bypass the closure.
It will then shut again from April 25 to 28 and from May 2 to 5 for the project’s completion.
A spokesperson for Hopkins Homes said: “We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to deliver these essential improvements.
“We’re pleased with the progress made so far and remain committed to minimising disruption while ensuring the highest standards of safety and infrastructure development.”
The roadworks on Sicklesmere Road will serve a new housing development, by Hopkins Homes, for 363 homes for the Abbots Vale development and includes a new roundabout.
The spokesperson said work remains on schedule, with recent additions including major drainage installations, road resurfacing and reconstruction of footpaths, while key parts of the puffin crossing at the entrance to Nowton Park are complete.
This phase will focus on surfacing, lighting and final infrstructure installations, such as footpath and kerbing works, realignments of drains and landscaping.
