Former Constitutional Club in Bury St Edmunds on the market for £800,000

A Bury St Edmunds social club which closed last month after 138 years of trading is on the market.

The home of the Constitutional Club, at 12 Guildhall Street, is being advertised as a development opportunity for leisure, residential and office at £800,000 for the freehold.

Agent Merrifields said the building benefits from a bar, members room, large events room, kitchen, male and female toilets, snooker room, two offices, two flats, a good-sized enclosed garden and off-street parking.

Last month, Emma Warren, chairperson of the club, said it had been forced to shut as it was no longer making a profit and had suffered as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

The club had 319 members and employed one full time member of staff as well as five part time.

Last year, the club hosted the town’s first LGBTQ+ pride festival, which more than 200 people attended, and held monthly discos for adults with special needs.

It was a venue for beer festivals, private events, birthday parties, wedding receptions and wakes as well as performances by local bands.
