Apartments planned on site of former Argos in Bury St Edmunds’ Butter Market and Baxter Street
The remaining space of a town's former Argos is set to be transformed into five homes.
M & D Developments wants to convert the space behind The Cambridge Building Society in Bury St Edmunds into five apartments.
The whole building was last used as an Argos and planning permission was previously granted for four flats and retail use at the site.
A design and access statement on behalf of applicants M & D Developments said: “The town centre location means the scheme has a good relationship with local amenities, such as shops, the theatre, recreational spaces and the pub.”
The development would include a one-bedroom apartment over two floors. The plans also include three apartments with three bedrooms, and one with four bedrooms, which would each cover one floor.
The part-conversion would see the Cambridge Building Society remain but the area behind it altered – by setting it back from Baxter Street pavement to create more outside space for the apartments and adding balconies.
The plans also include a landscaped courtyard and a lift, while the four largest apartments would have a garage with areas for storage and bikes.
The previous application accepted in 2019 was made by Bellborough Ltd.
The building was used as the Playhouse Theatre and Cinema when it was constructed in 1925.
