Firefighters work through the night and strip roof after blaze in St Olaves Road, Bury St Edmunds

Firefighters have worked through the night and stripped a roof following a ‘well established’ blaze on a Bury St Edmunds estate.

Multiple crews were called at 4.45pm to St Olaves Road on the Howard Estate as well as two Suffolk Fire Rescue Service Operational Support Units.

St Olaves Road was shut from the roundabout by Suffolk Police and a resident described hearing what sounded like an explosion.

Three properties were impacted by the blaze.

A cause is yet to be established, with an investigation due later today.

Pete Blagg, station manager at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said at 9.30pm yesterday that crews had controlled and extinguished the blaze.

Six engines attended the scene at the height of the blaze.

“On arrival, we had quite a well established fire venting from the roof,” he said.

“We have scaled back the incident to a turntable ladder from Bury St Edmunds and a couple of pumping supporting appliances.

“We will continue to work throughout the night to strip the roof and to hotspot any remaining embers that may be present.

“The crews have worked incredibly hard tonight so we’re very grateful to them for resolving the incident.”

Mr Blagg also thanked residents for their cooperation.
