Festival brings art, music, dancing and Anglo-Saxons to Woolpit

Music, art, dancing and other community activities were enjoyed across Woolpit as part of the village’s annual festival.

The ‘Village Day’ on Saturday featured folk musicians at The Bull Inn, Anglo-Saxon re-enactors and children’s activities at childcare centre Woolpit ARC.

An art exhibition in the Institute included paintings of East Anglia by villager Roger Eburne, who died last year.

The event coincided with Woolpit Open Gardens and Cars on the Green. About 100 people show-cased their moves in a night of dance with Ipswich-based big band Swing Machine in the village hall.

Nick Foster, chairman of the Woolpit Festival Society, said: “We were very pleased with the whole day and we had a wonderful end to it all with the swing band.”

The festival has brought a range of musical stars to Woolpit such as Clare Presland, soloist with English National Opera, and folk musician John Kirkpatrick.

The festival will be brought to a close on June 30 with a production of musical The Green Children - focusing on a legend from the village. Pupils from Woolpit School will take to the stage at the village hall with the London-based Gelächter Wind Trio.
