Bury St Edmunds couple Laura Hutton and Andy Downey divided over Euro 2020 final between England and Italy

England is set to go head to head with Italy tonight in the final of Euro 2020 and for one household in Bury St Edmunds, it's coming home no matter what team wins.

Laura Hutton, who hails from Bury, and Andy Downey, who is half Italian and half Irish, will be on different sides this evening, as their home nations battle it out to be crowned champions of Europe.

Flags of both countries have been hung up in the couple's Nowton Estate home and both Laura and Andy will don their teams' shirts to show their support.

"All the way through the competition we've said 'imagine it ends up Italy and England in the final'," said Laura, 32.

"We didn't actually think it would happen though and we still can't believe it has. The chances were so slim and now we're here."

The rivalry between the couple is a friendly one - with their sons, aged four and nine, backing both teams - but Laura said she is still considering watching the game with her friends and fellow English fans.

"I've watched every game so far at our house so that's why I'm thinking I might go to my friends' house so I'm with people supporting England," said Laura, who is predicting a 2-1 win for the Three Lions.

Twenty-nine-year-old Andy added that he didn't want to make a prediction for fear of jinxing the result.

Laura has been celebrating throughout the tournament and described England's 2-1 victory against Denmark on Wednesday as 'an amazing feeling'.

"It was crazy, I felt sick the whole game," she said. "But it was just brilliant, I was so happy for the team."

And the celebrations won't stop tonight if England do bring home the trophy, as Laura plans to host a pool party for family and friends later this month.

"I'll definitely have a massive party if we win and I'm sure there will be street parties and things because it's a big deal and lots of people will want to celebrate," she said.

"It's just the lift we've all needed after everything that happened over the last year and it's just giving everyone a bit of hope and unity."

She added that even Italian Andy will join in the festivities if England do go on to lift the cup.

"His heart is very much in Italy but he said it'd be lovely for either country to win. He'd never be upset about it," said Laura.

Laura and Andy won't be the only ones torn on who to support in the European championships.

David Snell, of Starre Road in Bury, is one-quarter Italian and usually supports Italy whenever they are playing.

"Having a bit of Italian heritage I am slightly torn as I have always celebrated the Italian wins... but maybe just not for this Sunday," he said.

He also added that he thought the tournament had united the country after a difficult 18 months of lockdowns and coronavirus restrictions.

"I think the whole tournament has woken the nation up from being in hibernation, it has brought groups together again to enjoy English football," he said.
