County football pays its respects to referee Dan

The family of a referee from Stowmarket have thanked the football community for tributes after he died suddenly aged 33.

Daniel Mason, who officiated games in the Suffolk and Ipswich League, died of a diabetes-related issue on November 21.

His father David and mother Susan said: “We were very proud of Daniel and loved him with all our hearts.

“He has left a big hole in our hearts and will be missed every day.”

Managers, players and clubs on social media posted tributes to the father-of-two.

Haughley United said: “The club is saddened to hear the passing of former assistant manager of the reserves and Suffolk FA referee Dan Mason.

“Dan was assistant to Dan Bullock a few seasons back he will be missed, a true gentleman.”

Alan Dale, Suffolk FA Senior Referee Development Officer, said the level five official was a well-respected figure among colleagues.

He said: “The infectious laugh that Dan possessed meant that he was a popular figure in any match day environment or dressing room. On behalf of everyone at Suffolk FA, our thoughts and condolences are with Daniel’s family.”

Dan first took up the whistle in 2007 – his first game was at Bacton United 89 in September that year – and also got the chance to officiate in Spain in June 2009.

Mr Mason added: “Daniel’s refereeing meant the world to him, in the past he had put it before work if he had to.

“We have been overwhelmed with the response and tributes paid to Daniel.”

Leagues that Dan officiated in also held a minute’s silence at matches last weekend to remember him.

The funeral service will be at St Andrew’s Church, Great Finborough, on Friday, December 14, at 2pm.

Flowers can be sent c/o Meredith Greengrass Funeral Service, 9 Marriotts Walk, Stowmarket IP14 1AF.
