Community figures scoop star accolades at Babergh and Mid Suffolk awards




The winners have been announced for the stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk awards.

Amongst those to scoop an accolade was Carol Pybus and Chris Brooks from Stowmarket Rookery Bowls Group.

The event in Hadleigh, organised by Babergh and Mid Suffolk councils, saw Carol and Chris jointly accept volunteer of the year.

As well as this, Carol was also awarded community hero of the year at the Stowmarket town council ‘star awards’.

The couple have opened up a new Stowmarket happy days fun club.

They and their volunteers from Stowmarket Rookery Bowling club visit three care homes a week and help keep around 60 residents active.

Carol said: “We are encouraging everybody and even those without any disability living at home to come and join us for some fun, games, activity, a cup of tea, biscuits and to meet new friends.”

Other award winners included, Cabbages & Kings and the Mix (business in the community award), Ocala (business growth award), Redgrave community society (community spirit of the year award and overall star), Courthouse cafe volunteers (best community achievement award).

As well as, Lavenham Community Land Trust (community project of the year award), Inspire Suffolk’s Princes Trust Team at Stowmarket (community project of the year award), Mark Trent, Scorpion Martial Arts Academy (sporting achievement of the year award), Caroll Reeve, Lavenham community volunteer (special recognition).

Cllr Julie Flatman, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “The night was about celebrating the real heroes and heroines who’ve done so much in our districts.

“We feel so proud to be able to offer these awards to recognise such outstanding achievements.”
